Umtata Child Abuse Resource Centre (UCARC) strives to be an advocacy based organisation that facilitates independent, self-sustained communities that promotes child protection and childrens rights.
Our Mission
We collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to promote childrens rights and prevent all forms of violence against children. We do this by sensitising, educating and empowering children and communities.
Our Purpose
UCARC is a non-profit organisation (NPO) based in the O.R. Tambo District, this being one of the seven districts of the Eastern Cape probvince, South Africa.Based on the mission statement, UCARC purpose is to promote and advocate for the rights of the child including to prevent and address child abuse in all its forms. UCARC uses a Children’s Rights Community Development Project to work with, capacitate and support communities, mainly but not only in the rural areas. The organisation works, in collaboration with government officials, to take responsibility for ensuring that children’s rights are fulfilled.
UCARC instigates the bringing together of government officials, community leaders (traditional, religious and political), educators and community members, at Ward level, as independent and sustainable Community Children’s Rights Steering Committees. It also delivers programmes, in communities, schools, with Government Departments and with likeminded NGOs, to promote and capacitate on: child rights advocacy, child participation, psychosocial support, parenting skills and positive discipline.
To reach a wider audience UCARC uses media, such as radio and local newspapers, to engage community members in children’s rights discussions and it collaborates with Government Departments and likeminded NPOs to facilitate community awareness campaigns.
Our Goal
To ensure that children within the O.R. Tambo District Municipality grow and develop in a safe environment through empowered, sensitised and independent communities that collaborate and advocate for the realisation of childrens rights.
